COBI Boeing B-29 Superfortress Bomber FeaturesHistorical black-and-white reference photo of a Boeing B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber in flight.

COBI designed this model around both display value and recognizable B-29 details. The long fuselage, four-engine layout, broad wing and distinctive glazed nose immediately identify the Superfortress. Additionally, the historical “Monsoon Goon” markings give this set a very different appearance from the natural-metal B-29s that many collectors know best.

Key features include:

  • 1,074-piece construction with an impressive 23.62-inch wingspan.
  • Historic “Monsoon Goon” markings with an olive drab and neutral gray color scheme.
  • Rotating propellers and opening bomb bay doors for a more interactive display.
  • Movable gun positions that recreate the B-29’s distinctive defensive armament.
  • Detachable wheels with rubber tires for alternate display configurations.
  • Bomb-load elements that can be displayed inside the open bomb bays.
  • Black display stand with transparent supports to create an in-flight appearance.
  • Collectible identification plaque displaying the aircraft name, scale and U.S. flag.
  • Durable printed details that add crisp markings without relying on applied graphics.

The stand is especially useful because the B-29’s broad wing and long fuselage demand significant shelf space. Moreover, displaying the aircraft in flight gives a clear view of the underside, bomb bays and four-engine configuration.

The Real B-29 Superfortress

The real Boeing B-29 Superfortress represented a major leap in bomber technology. It incorporated pressurized crew compartments, long-range capability and a sophisticated computer-assisted remote defensive gun system. B-29s began combat operations in Asia in 1944, initially operating from India and China before the main force later moved to bases on Saipan, Guam and Tinian.

Those early India-and-China operations formed part of Operation Matterhorn, the strategic bombing campaign against Japanese and Japanese-controlled targets in Asia. Later, B-29s became central to the air offensive against the Japanese home islands. Their missions included conventional bombing, large-scale incendiary raids and aerial mining. Specially modified B-29s also carried out the atomic bombing missions against Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.

Meet “Monsoon Goon”

Importantly, set #5774 does not depict Enola Gay or Bockscar. Instead, COBI chose the much less commonly modeled “Monsoon Goon.” This aircraft served with the 794th Bombardment Squadron of the 468th Bombardment Group and operated from India during the China-Burma-India campaign. COBI’s olive drab and neutral gray finish reflects the distinctive appearance of this particular aircraft.

Therefore, the model gives collectors something beyond another late-war natural-metal Superfortress. It represents an earlier chapter in the B-29’s combat history and connects directly with the long-range missions flown from the China-Burma-India theater.

Why Add Set #5774 to Your Collection?

The COBI Boeing B-29 Superfortress Bomber combines a substantial build, unusual historical camouflage and excellent display features in one impressive aircraft model. Its 1:72 scale keeps the bomber manageable while still producing a nearly 24-inch wingspan. As a result, it works equally well as a centerpiece or alongside other American World War II bombers.

For another legendary U.S. heavy bomber, pair the B-29 with the COBI Consolidated B-24D Liberator #5739 at MilitaryBricks.com. Together, the aircraft show the evolution from America’s workhorse wartime heavy bombers to the technologically advanced, long-range Superfortress.
