The Dornier Do J Wal N-25, immortalized in this COBI set, played a pivotal role in Roald Amundsen’s 1925 Arctic expedition. This German seaplane, designed for extreme polar conditions, was instrumental in the attempt to reach the North Pole by air. On May 21, 1925, Amundsen, alongside Lincoln Ellsworth and crew, launched from Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, in the N-25 and N-24. Despite landing 130 miles short of the pole due to engine issues, the team’s resilience shone through. They carved an ice runway, enabling the N-25 to return safely. Consequently, this expedition marked the northernmost latitude reached by plane at the time, cementing Amundsen’s legacy. This set, complete with an Amundsen minifigure, honors that daring mission.
Once assembled, the COBI Dornier Do J Wal measures approximately 14.6 inches long, 17.7 inches wide, and 4.3 inches tall, making it an impressive display piece.
