Description

Unleash the WWII Legend of the U-Boat

The COBI U-BOAT U-52 (Type VIIB) is a meticulously designed construction set. It uses 474 pieces to bring a critical chapter of naval history to life. The German Type VII U-Boat was the backbone of the Kriegsmarine’s submarine fleet during the Battle of the Atlantic in World War II. The Type VII became an icon of naval warfare. Specifically, the improved VIIB variant, which U-52 represents, was known for its rugged design and great effectiveness.

Historical Context: The Hunter of the Atlantic

Launched in 1939, U-52 became a formidable hunter. It primarily operated in the dangerous waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Indeed, its mission was to fight against Allied convoys.SM U-52 - Wikipedia

  • Key Engagements: U-52 served during the intense early years of the Battle of the Atlantic. It completed numerous patrols. It sank several merchant vessels and earned its commander, Ottoheinrich Junker, the Knight’s Cross. For example, a notable success was when the U-Boat sank the British armed merchant cruiser HMS Francisco Monte (F86) in September 1940.

  • The Type VIIB Advantage: The Type VIIB improved the original design. Therefore, it featured an extra fuel tank that extended its operational range. It also boasted an improved power plant, making it a more potent and enduring weapon.

This 1:144 scale model captures the historic vessel’s distinct silhouette and engineering. Consequently, it offers a rewarding build for collectors and history enthusiasts.

Key Features of Your COBI U-52 Model:

  • Impressive Scale: The final model is 18 inches (45.7 cm) long. This provides a substantial display piece.

1 review for COBI U-52 U-Boat Type VIIB Model #4852 (WW2 Naval Bricks)

  1. Bill S. (verified owner)

This set is so fiddly and frustrating. The build starts off fine, but by the end I was so fed up with it that when I accidentally dropped and it exploded like a grenade I just scooped the parts up and put them back in the box. Here is what’s wrong with this set:
    1. Missing part. There is a fairly crucial piece to the completion of the set completely missing. That being one of the long curved slope pieces on the side of the hull. That set the tone for the rest of the build, but was not a deal breaker. It would also make the third time that I would need to contact Cobi and wait a couple of months to get a replacement part.

    2. The rudders are held on by a single bar and clip connection. It has zero friction and just flops and slides all over the place. The bow planes aren’t much better with an eye and bar connection.

    3. Now for the most infuriating problem with the design, the ropes. It is way too easy to over tighten or over loosen the ropes. Even if you think to got them perfectly taut they pull parts they’re attached to way too easily. It is definitely a superglue necessary issue. Especially the aft lines that are attached in what Lego would consider an illegal technique of passing the line between a clip and the snot bricks it attaches to. What makes this worse is that the clip piece doesn’t want to seat all the way because of the clear pieces representing the railings.

    4. Finally, the connection to the stand is absolutely abysmal. It is only attached by two studs on 1×2 single stud plates. The connection is so weak that literally breathing on it is enough to knock it off the stand. Cobi has the same plates with a longer stud
In their inventory. That would have been a much better connection.
