The Messerschmitt Me 262, known as the Schwalbe, or “Swallow,” helped usher military aviation into the jet age. It first flew under jet power on July 18, 1942. By 1944, it was entering combat over Europe, where its speed presented Allied aircrews with a new challenge.
The fighter’s twin Junkers Jumo 004 engines delivered a maximum speed of approximately 540 mph. Its four nose-mounted cannons made it a dangerous interceptor against bomber formations. However, technical promise could not overcome Germany’s worsening wartime situation. Engine problems, fuel shortages, damaged transportation networks, and a shortage of trained pilots limited its effectiveness. Of more than 1,400 aircraft produced, fewer than 300 saw combat. nationalmuseum.af.mil
That combination of advanced engineering and difficult operational conditions makes the Me 262 a fascinating subject for a historical collection. Learn more about its development and service in the Messerschmitt Me 262 Wikipedia article.
How large is the completed model?
The aircraft measures approximately 12.8 inches long, 15 inches across the wings, and 3.3 inches high. Allow additional clearance when arranging it on the display stand.
Does this set include a pilot and display stand?
Yes. Set #5776 includes one Walter Nowotny pilot brick figure, a display stand with transparent support, and an identification plaque.
Can the cockpit and landing gear move?
Yes. The canopy opens, the landing gear retracts, and the wheels roll. These features let you change the model’s presentation without rebuilding the aircraft.
Pair the COBI Messerschmitt ME 262A-1a with the COBI Focke-Wulf FW 190 F-8 #5871 to explore two different approaches to wartime aircraft design. The Fw 190 set uses a smaller 1:48 scale, so consider them companion display pieces rather than matching-scale diorama partners.
