Commissioned in 1937, ORP Błyskawica was among the most modern destroyers in Europe at the outbreak of World War II. Shortly before Germany invaded Poland, she escaped to Britain as part of Operation Peking, allowing her to continue the fight alongside the Royal Navy.
During the war, Błyskawica participated in convoy escort operations across the Atlantic, supported Allied amphibious landings, and fought in the Norwegian Campaign. She also served during Operation Dynamo, helping protect the evacuation of Allied troops from Dunkirk, and later took part in the Normandy campaign following D-Day.
One of her most celebrated achievements came in May 1942 when she defended the town of Cowes on England’s Isle of Wight during a major Luftwaffe bombing raid. By laying down an intense anti-aircraft barrage, the crew helped reduce the damage to the town and shipyards, an action still remembered today.
Today, ORP Błyskawica is permanently preserved in Gdynia, Poland, where visitors can tour one of the last surviving Allied destroyers of World War II.
